Education is a vital component for maintaining individuality and growing up in life. It is important for making a career in life. Even though some of the fields like sports do not require much of intellectual capability, yet a basic level of education is necessary even for them. At least understanding a language, conveying the language through writing or speech is an important part of self-development which can only be acquired through education.

India’s education sector has been steadily growing over the past few decades. The literacy rate according to the census data of 2011 has revealed that the literacy rate in India has increased to 74.04%.

Even though the literacy rate has increased, it needs to be noted that the definition of being a literate as per India’s constitution has remained feeble. According to the Indian constitution, any one above age 7 who can read and write in any language with an ability to understand is considered a literate. Thus, even though there has been a progress in terms of the literacy rate, the actual education level of the people in India has remained poor. Thus, in order to help them, several NGOs have come up who are working towards the development of the society in the same direction. There are several NGOs which have come up to improve the education level of the children like CRY, Teach for India, Pratham, Barefoot college India, Save the children, Lakshyam etc.

These NGOs are helping India to become a nation that can compete with the developed nations in terms of academic knowledge, development of human capital and improvement of the overall education system in India. Even though governmenet has made several initiatives in this direction, however, government alone cannot change the current scenario. In order to bridge the gap, these NGOs have come up to improve the scenario.

One such NGO in India for children education is ‘Lakshyam- Hands to Hearts’. Since its inception in 2004, LAKSHYAM, a non-governmental organization, established itself for the welfare of the society, with a focus on the development of children, education, and women empowerment. To help rural women learn easily employable skills. They have worked on several cases to improve the education in India. One of their aims is to give children a conducive and progressive environment for their development without any shortcomings. That means a total self-development of a child right from the early stage. They aim to develop a society in which they want the highly qualified teachers to teach the students who have not been privileged in the society. By this, they aim to develop a standard system of education in India.

Over the years, Lakshyam has expanded and strengthened its inventive programs and initiatives to bring a practical turnaround in the present social structure. The activities that the organization is actively involved in are various camps, workshops and programs that are designed to cater to the need-based approach. Lakshyam is currently working in 7 states across India and recently commenced its international chapter with Scotland. Two stores in Aberdeen, Scotland showcase our handcrafted products which have definitely given us a global platform.

To broaden its horizons, Lakshyam enhanced its efforts by initiating few major programs to strengthen its impact amongst the not-so-privileged masses. It has three programs running under, the Butterfly program which focuses on to integrate the two pivotal building blocks of a healthy child, Development and Participation. Education and monthly activities like dance, drawing and painting, games and puppet show are organized to keep children engaged in coming to school. Not just this they do also provide computer learning class by IIT students and even summer camps are organized.

With that, they have other program running for children which is Toy Library, whose main aim is to bring back the essence of childhood. Every child needs that environment to nurture and grow, and playing is one of its parts. And this program involves the placement of toy boxes where people can donate toys and educational books. They have around 13 centres across 11 states and last year they have collected and delivered around 2,50,000 toys and books.

Apart from this Lakshyam is also focusing on women empowerment and upliftment and providing them vocational training to economically support them through Rooh program.

Lakshyam has become one of the few organisations in India which have worked hard simultaneously in various domains of child and women development.

One of the most important factors in the growth and development of children is education. Systematic learning enhances the capabilities of a child and enabled him to prepare for a better and brighter future. It a bridge connecting children with their dreams. This is why schools are important, a school is like a temple of learning, shaping kids into well informed human beings that have the ability to think, process, learn, and develop values. 

Although the literacy rate in India has gone up, with Tripura being in the lead with a whopping 94.65%, while Bihar the least literate state in India only has a literacy rate of 63.80%. According to a report by UNESCO in 2014, India has the highest percentage of illiterate adults in the world. While there has been a sevenfold increment since independence, we still have a long way to go. 

In 1947, the literacy rate in India was only 12%. Also centuries of being slaves to the British had left India in a state of abject poverty and zero governance. There are numerous causes of illiteracy in this country for example poverty, inadequate school facilities,lack of proper education, parents with little or no conceplt of education, huge family sizes, deep rooted patriarchy complelling girls to stay at home and so on.

Lack of quality education in India is a serious hindrance to its growth. In a country with one of the highest youth population in the world,there are still millions of children with no access to education. This often forces children to indulge into petty thefts and crime to survive and as a means to earn money. 

Government has taken various steps to spread education to rural people in remote areas. One of them is the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. It involves making education free and compulsory for all children between the ages 6 to 14. Padhe Bharat Padhe is a sub programme of the Abhiyan, designed to improve comprehensive early reading, writing, and enhancing mathematical skills of children. The Indian government has also taken many steps to improve the quality of higher education across the country such as opening up of new Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. 

Despite all these measures, according to Census 2011, around 99 million children have dropped out of school. This is a harrowing account of the dismal state of education among the poor which needs urgent attention. The poor need to be made aware that the only way out of their desperate poverty stricken state is by educating their kids and by sending them to school and the government also needs to work towards improving the quality of education offered in government schools so that the children are motivated to stay in school and study. 

There are several NGO’s in the country that are tirelessly working towards providing the disadvantaged children with the means to get education by opening up schools specifically meant for them, funding their school fees, getting them admitted into good schools, campaigning to make poor families aware of the benefits of a good education etc..

Juvenile Delinquents: Victims Or Perpetrators?

WHAT IS JUVENILE DELINQUENCY? 

A juvenile delinquent refers to a person who has not yet attained the statutory age of majority participating in crimes and those who are at conflicts with the law. There are specific provisions in the legal system for dealing with such offenders, such as juvenile courts and juvenile detention centers. In certain cases, where the nature of the crime is severe, they may also be charged as adults. In recent years there has been an astonishing increase in juvenile crimes posing a great threat to their individual development as well as the development of the society. 

REALITY VS FANTASY 

Teenagers and young adults are at an impressionable age, mature enough to want to make their own choices but not mature enough to grasp the consequences of their actions. The attributes of the modern western society are deftly sinking its paws into the young and unprotected minds of our teens and adolescents. In this fast paced virtual world, the effects of technology and social media and its impact can no longer be ignored. In our close knit Indian society, freedom to make our own decisions and choosing how to live our lives has always been a privilege only to be awarded when you are old enough and independent enough. That is not the case anymore. Kids these days want everything now, from expensive mobile phones, bikes, clothes, etc. and sometimes they are ready to go to any lengths to get what they want. The peer pressure to look cool and hip also drives them into doing immoral deeds. They now want everything handed out to them instead of wanting to work for it, and when they are unable to procure it that way, they resort to criminal activities. 

FAMILY AND FRIENDS 

The environment in which a person lives consists of the family, neighbors, friends, the socio economic condition of the community. Family is the first interaction any child has on his birth. Family has a huge influence on the development of a child. A warm and loving family will create a positive atmosphere for the nourishment of a child but when the family is cold, neglectful, harsh, and rejecting, the child will develop hatred, hostility, and distrust towards people. Broken and poor homes often lead to runaways. This often leads them straight into a life of crime. Children who escape their abusive homes are often starving for love, comfort and left to their own devices often resort to theft to survive. 

DRUG ABUSE 

The incidence of drug abuse is higher in children and adolescents than that of the general population. The usage of drugs being illegal in India is like a forbidden fruit for them. The enigma surrounding drugs and their utter lack of control often makes them vulnerable to it. The addiction to drugs has a palpable and devastating effect on their growing mind and body. It weakens their ability to think clearly and pushes them into a mental state where they constantly think of ways to get the next fix. This often leads them into the shackles of drug trafficking and prostitution. CURBING THE 

EFFECTS OF THIS PANDEMIC 

The future of this country depends upon the young generation. A generation of people with well-formed minds and conscientious behavior is the path to progress as opposed to drug addled teens with violent and destructive tendencies. As a society, it is our duty to ensure that children are provided with a loving and tender environment to grow with equal opportunities for everyone. 

There are several NGO’s in India working to reform juvenile delinquents and to educate the children so they don’t resort to criminal activities. Lakshyam is fulfilling its duty towards street children who come from poor homes by providing them free primary education as well as teaching them moral values and enrolling them into schools. Lakshyam also runs a volunteer program where people can come and teach the children and be a part of a better tomorrow.

Human Trafficking - Humans Are Not For Sale

INTRODUCTION 

The United Nations defines human trafficking as, 

“the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation”. 

It is estimated that twenty thousand people in India were victims of this heinous crime in the past year. It is a multi-billion business behind only drugs and arms trafficking. This sort of an illegal flesh trade is seen as a thriving and profitable business mainly because of its repetitive nature, wherein the humans can be bought and sold multiple times over and over. The advent of technology and advancements in the field of transportation and communication has made this illegal trade more appealing than ever. Masses of young children and women living in poverty and desperation can be lured away to a place thousands of miles away from their homes into bondage labor, sex trafficking etc. all without the hope of ever being rescued. Women and girls are kidnapped and trafficked all around the world for commercial sexual exploitation and forced marriages. Men and boys are kidnapped for bonded labor or to work as gigolos etc. 

CAUSES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING 

One of the main causes of human trafficking in India is the abject poverty. Around thirty percent of the Indian population still lives in acute poverty. This creates an opportunity for unscrupulous elements in the society to procure cheap or free labor. Young able bodied unemployed men desperately looking for work often fall into the trap wherein someone whisks them away to a foreign land with no rights and no freedom where they are forced to work all day with no pay and little food. The reason for sex trafficking is growing due to the increasing demand for women. Since ancient times, women have been looked at a pretty little things decorated for and used to pleasure men. This was the practice during colonial times, where rich kings often kept concubines for their sexual pleasure. Now, this practice has evolved into forced prostitution or sex trafficking. 

Girls as young as ten, are snatched away from the loving comfort of their homes and hidden away inside the dark kothas in the dingy lanes of brothels. There they are made to service as many as twenty men a day without a penny for the rest of their lives. The declining sex ratio in India can also be seen as a cause for bride trafficking in India. This trade is thriving not only in rural areas but also in urban areas. This is a hindrance to women and child development in India. There is a price for each girl and her owner then makes her work endlessly to recover this supposed debt from them. In most cases these girls are scouted by neighbors and relatives posing as well wishers wanting to help the girl in finding work to earn money and unsuspecting family members duped by the prospects of extra cash are talked into handing over their custody to these criminals only to never see them again. 

PROTECTIVE MEASURES 

Through the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act (ITPA) 1956, the Indian government penalizes trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation, with a penalty of seven years to life. Section 366(A) and 372 of the Indian Penal Code, prohibits the kidnapping and selling of minors into prostitution respectively. Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012, is a special law to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation. On May 2013, a bill was passed in India, rendering human trafficking a criminal offence. This decision was made as a result of an international outcry against the brutal Delhi gang rape of 2012.

Lakshyam is taking several measures and working tirelessly towards imparting education to underprivileged girls in various communities across the country. It is also working towards the development of women and children by imparting skills to them and creating avenues for them to be self-reliant.

Because of the need of the education sector, as India is a land to maximum no. of youths, one name that is rising high in this field is “Lakshyam”, a non-governmental organization established in 2009. They have opened centers for the education of the children in India across 3-5 states under its child welfare programme ‘Butterfly’ where the main focus is to literate those children whose parents cannot afford the school fees of government or private schools. They also provide a platform to the children to explore their talents by organizing certain competitions preparing them for this competitive world. In current days, many people are connecting with this organization and joining their hands for the education of the children. Lakshyam also provides free of cost tuition to those kids who lack behind in the schools. Very efficient and skilled teachers work for these schools at Lakshyam who provide teaching in a structured manner and handle them according to their age. With the concern for education, the organization also takes up other aspects of students by organizing health checkup and campaigns. This organization also engaged in the activities pertaining to the women empowerment (Rooh Women welfare Programs). 

They also arrange cultural activities for the underprivileged children that make them confident and presentable.Some educational touring programmes are also organized by them for the underprivileged children that make them understand the possibilities of real world and also helps these kids to understand the future. The organization is working at its best, changing the life of the small kids rising them as the future of the country with new potentials and skills.

Lakshyam NGO- Volunteering Program

India as a country provides many opportunities to its youth to come up and volunteer for various causes. It offers a wide range of volunteer programs in diverse fields be it healthy, education, sanitation etc.

• “Rooh-Awakening Women’s soul” was started to educate the women of India and empower them with the confidence to lead a healthy lifestyle.
• “Butterfly-Child Welfare and Education” provides Remedial Education Centers for students, in order to fill the gap in the government education system.
• “Lakshyam Toy Library” aims at delivering toys and books from the privileged kids to the not-so-privileged ones.
• “Abhyaas” undertakes educating the girl child plus recycling paper to make notebooks.
• “Three Musketeers” connects Lakshyam to the youth of the country.
