Residential Volunteering Programs in India

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Many of us would’ve come across this quote at some point, but most of us would’ve skimmed over it without thinking too much about it.

Today, I urge to really pick your brain to try to recall the last time you experienced something new.

Maybe it was the first time you lived away from home. Maybe it was your first driving lesson. Maybe it was your first day at work.

Whatever it was, I guarantee that most of us go long periods of time without trying anything new. Whether it’s out of fear, laziness or time constraints; there’s always something holding us back.

There is, however, another question that’s more difficult to answer.

When was the last time you changed someone’s life?

You might say that changing someone’s life is a culmination of much time and energy being invested into the same, but what if I told you it’s far simpler than that?

Lakshyam is a Non-Governmental Organisation that imbibes this idea into its operations by offering volunteer work in India. Lakshyam’s volunteering stands out from conventional programmes - by allowing people to contribute to the organisation what they do best, Lakshyam manages to provide productive work for volunteers and effective results for the women and children they aim to educate.

Lakshyam’s residential volunteering programme is one-of-a-kind. Volunteers can take up residence in India to help Lakshyam accomplish its goals of women and child development.

Volunteers above 18 years of age with a passion for social welfare would find Lakshyam’s residential programmes a highly rewarding and satisfying experience. By being able to educate children at the grassroot level, volunteers are able to see, first-hand, the fruits of their labour. There is perhaps no greater joy.

Lakshyam offers a diverse range of tasks for its volunteers, from media and communication to administrative work to teaching children. The organisation ensures that each volunteer will find their perfect fit.

For 4-week Residential Volunteering Programs in India, volunteers work at one or more of Lakshyam’s centres and are able to participate in a variety of experiences - from interacting with women and children to helping them rebuild houses to bringing smiles to the faces of many of Lakshyam’s beneficiaries.

Lakshyam welcomes volunteers from all over the world to come assist them in their mission to educate and empower each child. Learning about and adapting to Indian culture will surely be an enriching experience for anyone who wishes to take up this programme.

By working in the slums and small schools, a volunteer can experience the very heart and soul of India - the women and children who work day and night to rise above poverty and create a better life for themselves.

Lakshyam’s administration extends a warm welcome to all volunteers who come on board, and the enthusiasm is only sustained by the children who the volunteers come to work with. One would be pleasantly surprised to see how children with close to no resources can have such a passion for life and learning.

As mentioned, it’s easier to change someone’s life than you might think. It’s even easier due to the fantastic work of organisations like Lakshyam that work tirelessly to help disadvantaged sections of society.

So the next time someone asks when you last did something for first time, I hope you’ll answer that you changed someone’s life.

NGO’s WORKING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN INDIA

Women’s movements in India have been going on since per-independence days. It has moved from demands of social reforms to equality in the post independence period. Sadly, even after independence women in India are still facing violation of their human rights and do not enjoy or get equal treatment as men. India is still a male dominating country. From rape and domestic violence to forced labor and denial of educational and employment opportunities, the struggle for rights and empowerment is a disheartening one for Indian women.

As per Census 2011, the population of India is 1210.19 million comprising 586.47 million (48.5%) females. Females have a share of 48.1% in the urban population and of 48.6% in the rural population. The sex ratio is 943 as per the census of 2011. The literacy rate of females is 64.63%.  In the adult category the literacy rate is reduced to 59.3% compared to 78.8% for males.  Thus education for women has always been a problem over the years. Also, about 68% of the girls drop out from school even before they reach 8 grade.
Education is one aspect of economic development. Involvement of women in the workforce also enhances the economic development of the country. According to the census of 2011, the workforce participation rate shows that 25.51% were females and 53.26% males.

The crime against women is growing day by day at an alarming rate. In order to empower women government has come up with several laws and policies to safeguard and empower women in the society. A National Commission for Women was also set up in 1992 with the same objective to empower women and safeguard them.

In order to speed up the women empowerment process it is not on the government who is coming up with laws and polices but several NGO’s are working collaboratively to make the society a better place for women to live in. Some of the NGO’s include CREA, CARE India, Snehalaya, Swayam and Lakshyam.

Lakshyam’s program ‘Rooh- Awakening Womens’ Soul’, meaning the spirit, is a strategically developed, three-tier project that aims at strengthening a woman’s character towards life itself.

The first step in this program begins from providing remedial education to children; where children from under privileged sections of the society are taught basic arithmetic and how to read and write. Second step is to provide an essential degree of exposure along with professional training in behavior and counseling, Third step is equipping girls with an established platform to sell and showcase their skills.

Apart from this, the program also targets financial development by organizing various workshops by portraying marketable skills which these girls women possess in the form of handmade goods that enable poor women to self generate employment opportunities.

Renowned professional trainers personally conduct these workshops and training sessions. Few women also get an opportunity to work under them and not only get a source of income for themselves but also learn in better ways enhancing their skills and potential. Keeping in mind the saying Health is Wealth, health awareness campaigns for women are also organized every now and then. It includes creating awareness about importance of iodine in salt to causes of Breast Cancer to importance of personal hygiene.

Lakshyam’s struggle has so far enabled thousands of women to realize their true potential and be a support to families and played a crucial role in the woman and child development of the country.

How to Choose a Volunteer Program in India and Abroad?

While travelling abroad is one of the most fulfilling ways of gaining knowledge and discovering new things, one approach to make your travel even more meaningful is to apply for a volunteer program in one of the country you’re visiting, as it allows you to share your passion and your energy with the local populations and can lead to great experiences.

You should however not jump into this without thinking things out. In order to be really effective and truly help the organization you wish to work with, you have to make sure that you really have an interest in the local culture, in the mission you will be working on and feel confident about the things that you will be doing. It is important to conduct extensive research about the different projects that you are considering and not engage in such activities before you are a 100% willing to do so.

The first thing you can ask yourself is how can I contribute. Do I want to help financially because my resources allow me to do it? Or would I rather get personally involved and apply for a real internship? At Lakshyam, you have the opportunity to volunteer and participate actively in the missions of the organization, and the team is always eager to welcome passionate and dedicated volunteers.

If you decide to do that, you can afterwards ask yourself what is the issue that you feel the most concerned about. If you are more concerned about education, you can apply for a program dedicated to child welfare and participate by teaching children your skills if you have some valuable ones, or simply take care of them and set up activities. If you are more concerned about health issues, you can focus on another program that will tackle these questions. Lakshyam offers a wide range of different tasks for volunteers that can go from communication activities to organizing sports events, teaching children or participating in the construction of new facilities for example... You can choose the program and the tasks that interest you the most and that will make you the more confident.

When applying for this program, there are some things that you should keep in mind. It is important to know the context of the place you are going to and meet some requirements. First of all, volunteers should be at least 18 years of age. They should also acquire some knowledge about Indian culture and the social norms so that they behave appropriately while on the field. The conditions of work and the surroundings should also be taken into account, as the volunteers will have to confront some situations that will be new to them. A background check on the slums might be preferable to have an idea of what to expect. Finally, learning a bit of Hindi could also be a good idea to be able to connect more easily with the local populations and have a privileged contact with them.

When your choice is made, prepare yourself for a strong and meaningful experience. Lakshyam will endeavor to make your volunteer program in India as versatile as possible so that you have a complete and diverse experience with us !

Child Welfare in India

India with 1.21 billion people constitutes as the second most populous country in the world, while children represent 39% of total population of the country. The figures show that the larger number of about 29% constitutes children in the age between 0-5 years.

The future of India lies in its young population. But what is our country doing to improve the overall conditions of the children? Although, a very powerful resource of India is its population, this resource has not been explored to the fullest. Children in many areas do not get access to basic healthy living conditions. Education for many children is as good as a luxury. Few of them are not even treated well at home and most of them resort to acts of theft, begging or child labor.

To improve the conditions of children there are various child welfare programmes like Mid-Day Meal Scheme, Pulse Polio Immunization Programme, Elimination of Child Labor, Integrated Child Development Services, etc. An NGO named Child Rights and You (CRY), works towards safeguarding the rights of children.

Lakshyam has recognized the issues faced by children and stared a child welfare program named Butterfly- Child Welfare and Education. The wings of the butterfly symbolize freedom. Lakshyam aims to provide a holistic education which will result in an all round development of the children.  Due to a lack of formal education, children at Lakshyam are taught many subjects like Hindi, English, Computer Science and Math. Lakshyam’s remedial center provides free of cost tutorials for children who face issues in any subjects at school. Many recreational activities like dance competitions, painting, puppet shows, magic shows, etc are organised for the children. They organise computer learning classes by IIT students and also, summer camps for children.  The other program for children is Toy Library that aims to bring back the essence of childhood.  Many children have missed out on having a playful childhood and Lakshyam aims to fill that gap between a child and his childhood through this program. People donate toys and books to this Toy Library which is accessed by kids to play, read and have a fun time.

Lakshyam has changed and improved the lives of many children. Lakshyam aims to impact of the quality of the lives of as many children as possible. Lakshyam has also opened a computer center in the Mahilong village, Jharkhand. There are two computers at this center which will help in enhancing the teaching process in the village. There are around 260 children who are benefitting from the programs at Lakshyam including children from areas like Vasant Kunj, Kurukshetra and Ghaziabad.

CHILD WELFARE PROGRAMMES IN INDIA

The revolutionary Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, making elementary education an entitlement for children in the 6-14 age group, 2009 was expected to directly benefit close to ten million children who did not attend school. The act did dramatically raise the number of school going children in the country. When we look back at the education scene, the pitfall primarily on access to education is no longer the real problem now, it is quality of education. A reformist move like this needed to be backed by the will to execute this with passion and in spirit of what was required for the building the nation of tomorrow.

Many NGOs in India focus on addressing this massive gap in the span of influence and scale each of them muster. Enrollment in schools does not automatically translate into better education. Lakshyam has made a lasting impact in these efforts with the ‘Hands to Hearts’ spirit of doing it.The firm belief of our founder  that ‘Education and holistic development are the weapon against all social evil’ is the cornerstone on which the foundation of learning is imbibed in our efforts. The understanding of the word ‘education’ for us is a wholesome view of raising standards of life covering every possible knowledge about healthcare, water, sanitation, academics, and about life. This is the philosophy behind our Butterfly programmer.  Our schools across India stands as living testimony of our firm belief.

As a child, everyone dreams for toys. Toys & books open the world of imagination, usher in the joys of holding something you love in your heart   Not many parents can fuel the dream of owning a toy of their child. In our country, this still falls into the realm of one whom we consider privileged where in the children who are not so fortunate due to circumstances beyond their control are left yearning. This promoted our founder to think of a unique and simple solution to ‘How do we break the privilege barrier ? ‘ . The concept of Toy Library took its birth to help every child live the essence of childhood encouraging to share, nurture and grow spending moments beyond the harsh realities of everyday life. The toys and education books donated by people find the way to the lives of these wonderful kids. From Ranchi to Theni, we are fortunate to witness smiles on4995 faces daily owning to this gesture.

As we try to move forward to bring education to every child, we realized the important hurdle lay in convincing the parents for the need of the same. A mother would always want the best for her child and by strengthening her voice in the family we could increase the chances of us positively touching the future of a child. Our woman and child development and women empowerment programme ‘Rooh’ teaches women different marketable skills, introduce to the need of health and hygiene, and assist them protect their interests and rights. We live in hope of being able to do justice to our wish in living the essence of ‘Awakening Womens’ Soul’ in our daily efforts

We have been lucky to be witness to positive changes in 18,000 lives spread across 11 states this year. This impact of reach helps keeps our faith and encourages us to do more very day at Lakshyam.

We share our founder’s dream to fight for a world where every being is equipped with the right weapon to tackle their problems. Every day for the team  is a step forward in the journey towards this dream.

Lakshyam, our forever goal ,  stands as an eternal  symbol of  our strive for  a better world.
